Custom AR uppers...is there a "local" market?

A few years ago I was assembling my own uppers and ended up doing some for friends and other local "customers" in TX. I really enjoyed doing it but have set it down for a while. I've been thinking of taking it back up again as I still have most of my tools. I even got a call from TX earlier this week asking if I still did builds.
So, do you guys think there's a market up here in NE Kansas to assemble uppers to customer specifications? There are endless possibilities out there if one wants specific accessories and calibers.
Is anyone already doing this anywhere near Topeka?
Thanks for any input.

If I were in your shoes, I’d totally think about diving back into those upper builds in NE Kansas. You’ve got the know-how and the right tools, and the fact that someone all the way from Texas reached out recently, that’s a sign your work made an impression. Good word-of-mouth like that doesn’t go away easily. If I were starting from scratch, I’d keep it simple at first. Maybe share a few of your builds on local forums or social media, and offer some discounted jobs to get people talking. Just test the waters and see what kind of feedback you get.

From what I'm seeing, the AR market in general is down right now. The best sellers are either cheap ARs, or good quality ones at good prices.

That said, with prices down, people may be interested in a custom build for a niche purpose or obscure round. Never know until you try.

Thanks for input guys. Here's my pitch idea. I'll mod it a bit before final release.

Uppers, built to order
Do you want a specific upper configuration but can't find it? Let me build it.
Tactical rigs in 5.56 or 300 BO.
Hunting rigs in 6.8 or 6.5?
I use BCM, Mega Arms and Zev flat top upper receivers as I've found them to be most consistent. You can provide your own receiver but I can't say you will get the same precision. I try to use FN, ARP, Ballistic Advantage or Faxon barrels. If you want something cheaper or more expensive that's fine; it's whatever your budget can handle. I can provide all the parts (usually at a discount) or I can build with your parts. I only use quality, US made parts if possible. I will never knowingly use Chinese parts. I do not upcharge on parts. I make money only on my labor ($XX per hour). I can also assemble your lower if you would like. I am willing to ship uppers at customer expense anywhere in the lower 48. I accept cash, check, USPS money order or Zelle. As I don't carry much inventory, 80% down is required prior to building so I can purchase the parts. I don't get paid until you're happy.
Contact me and we can discuss your custom build and get you a quote.
