Building featureless

I’ve been reading up on compliant AR configurations and I just realized I don’t know anyone who has actually built one. Has anyone here done it? What was your experience like, and how did you go about selecting the right components? Would you recommend it to others?

Kansas is (currently) one of the most gun-friendly states, there is little "compliance" you need to worry about. Are you moving to California or something?
