How can you hate guns?

Grew up in a farming family where guns were just part of life mainly for practical reasons like keeping pests at bay and filling the freezer with meat. But over time, it’s turned into more than just a necessity, it’s become a real passion

I was born in Junction City in 58, (I know...I know!) and my dad had signed me up for, I think 2 years in a row,

for target shooting. This would have been in the late 60's. The course was held on Saturday mornings in the

basement of the old Police department building in the PD shooting range. We shot .22 long rifle out of single shot

rifles, hung our own targets and each week we were taught gun safety and different shooting positions. At the end of

each session, we got our targets scored and got to take them home. That was some good times! I loved the smell of

the .22 powder in the morning!

ETA: I have been around guns ever since.

My Mom hated guns. We always assumed it was because her only brother was killed on Iwo Jima.

I see you're from Marion. Back in the late 70s a couple of guys I knew rescued a Douglas B26 bomber from an auto salvage yard in Marion. It was still capable of dropping bombs, having never been converted to any other function. They borrowed two R2800 engines from Bill Dempsay and Bill flew it to Rantoul after they worked on it all winter long.

Did it look like this? This is an A26. It had machine guns in the nose. The one they retrieved had clear class so a bombardier could do his thing.

No, it doesn't. The plane that was parked in the grass on the northeast corner of the High School was more of a fighter/bomber. I need to look it up to see what it was. The story goes that a Marion High School Graduate had joined the Navy and flew in WWII. After the war, I guess the War Department allowed certain vehicles to be displayed in front of buildings. I don't know how they asked or applied, but Marion got one like what the graduate had flown and he was able to go to Oklahoma and fly it back to Marion airport where it was towed to the location. It was only there a few years. I can't really say how many though.

The one you are talking about could have come from Delavan Air Base up by Herington. Maybe it was sold as scrap to the auto salvage yard.

But, back on topic, I don't know how you could not like guns either. A gun is just a tool, it's the heart

and mind of the person using it that is "good" or "bad".
