Jimenez J.A. 22
The Jimenez J.A. 22 (often written as JA-22) is a blowback operated and striker fired .22 LR caliber pistol with a slide and frame made of Zamak, a zinc/aluminum alloy.
The original design for this pistol was introduced by Jennings Firearms as the Jennings J-22 in 1978. Then Jennings was renamed to Calwestco in the mid-1980s before being ceded to Bryco Arms in 1991. When Bryco Arms declared bankruptcy in 2003 it was subsequently purchased by that company's former foreman, Paul Jimenez. Paul renamed the company Jimenez Arms and the J-22 was renamed the J.A. 22. Jimenez went bankrupt in mid-2020 and was bought out by JA Industries.
A 2001 Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives publication warned that the pistol is "extremely dangerous" when dropped, with the "potential for serious injury", due to an insufficient gap between the trigger bar and the sear. In fact, the factory manual advised carrying the gun with the chamber empty.
For a more in depth history of the companies involved in this pistol's history, check out my write-up on the Ring of Fire gun companies. The story has more twists than a daytime soap opera.
The Ring of Fire and the Saturday Night Special - a Catt57 essay
Mine originally had black grips but is now wearing a set of aftermarket white grips.
Being a dirt cheap "disposable" pistol, there was no real advertising done. It was expected that the price alone was sufficient to make it sell.
