You should always try out your home defense setup - how/where it is stored, how you can access it, who can access it, what your standard plan is, what your backup plan is...make sure you've done it a few times in daylight and darkness, so you won't be surprised by things like you just discovered.
Indoors tends to be close-quarters and light-colored walls, so bouncing a bright flashlight off them is a good way to blind yourself. Take a class in low-light techniques if you can, but practicing is second-best. Either way, you don't want the first time you're clearing your house in the dark to be the time the bad guys are there.
