For me, I would have to say a 1928 Springfield M1903 rifle. He got it in the early 70's and it
had already been converted to a deer rifle. It had a Fajen Monte Carlo stock and the barrel
had been shortened for the Lyman front sight and a Lyman rear peep sight was installed too.
I loved that old 30-06 and asked my Dad an untold number of times if we could restore it. All
he would say is "someday". He loaned it to an uncle in the early 80's and before my uncle could
use it, he passed away. Long story short, his son (my cousin) thought it was his dads so he kept it.
My dad didn't want to asked for it back and he always regretted it. When my Dad passed away 2 years
ago, my cousins widow and I were talking after my dads funeral, and I told her about my Dads rifle. When my cousin passed, 6 years ago, one of his boys got it. She talked to both of them by phone and the younger one had it.
By the next week, I had my Dads rifle back. It was in the same gun case with MY DADS INITIALS on the case.
I was glad to get it back, but at the same time pissed off because they had to have known it wasn't their dad
or their grandpas rifle.
